Health professionals who might not feel confident in defining what genomics is will nonetheless be aware of its influence. Whether it’s Angelina Jolie’s much-publicised BRCA1 diagnosis, or the use of targeted therapies like trastuzumab (Herceptin™), the impact of genomics in healthcare is already being felt.
With genomic advances being translated into mainstream clinical practice, it is vital that health professionals have a good awareness of genomics. As such, Health Education England’s Genomic Education programme has developed a short online course to provide a lively, informative overview of this exciting field, aimed at health professionals at all levels.
What does the course entail?
The two-hour course covers the fundamentals of the human genome, how it can influence a person’s health, and key ways in which genomic information is being used in a clinical setting, both now and in the future.
The course comprises a blend of textual content, video, animation and case studies, and features patient interviews and experts in the field of genomic medicine.
On completion of the course, a short assessment will provide the learner with an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned and to earn a completion certificate.
